The U.S. Army wanted a semi-automatic handgun to replace its revolvers. They also wanted a .45 caliber cartridge. John Moses Browning, from Utah, was tasked to develop both. It would be Browning's handgun design that went on to win the Army contract. The transition from revolver to semi-automatic concerned the Army. The revolver was reliable. Of course, recoil was considered, as Browning's handgun operating system utilized short-recoil, but reliability took precedence. He gave the Army what it wanted. Today, semi-automatic handgun reliability has been proven. We give thanks, in large part, to Browning. Still, the issue of recoil continues. And as a convergence of two notable trends in handgun development, lightweight materials and high pressure cartridges combine, recoil has become a more significant problem.
